Vaccines and Childhood Immunisations

Border General Practice is fully equipped to provide all vaccines and immunisations as required and in accordance with the National Immunisation Schedule.

All vaccines require an appointment to assess your eligibility, inform you of potential side effects, and monitor for any reaction after your vaccine.

We provide all government-funded immunisations, which includes COVID-19, childhood, and flu immunisations. We also can immunise to prevent against infections contracted during travel.

Flu Vaccine

The flu vaccine is important to have every year, especially in the lead-up to Winter. Variations of the flu can change from year to year, and the vaccine is updated to help protect you against new strains.

Watch out for our flu vaccine clinics during peak times.

Am I eligible for the free flu vaccine?

Under the National Immunisation Program, free flu vaccines are provided to the following groups who are at higher rise of complications from flu:

  • Children aged 6 months to less than 5 years

  • All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over

  • People aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions that increase their changes of severe influenza and its complications

  • Pregnant women (at any stage during pregnancy)

  • People aged 65 years and over.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Pneumococcal vaccines are recommended for people aged 70 years and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over, and those with a serious medical risk condition.

Pneumococcal vaccines are provided free of charge under the National Immunisation Program for all young children, people aged from 70 years and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over, and people with some risk conditions.

Childhood Immunisations

Immunisation from birth is highly recommended for all Australian children. The National Immunisation Program covers the cost of routine childhood immunisations recommended for all children in Australia.

Routine childhood immunisations help to protect your child against diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio, pneumococcal disease, meningococcal C disease, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), rotavirus, chickenpox (varicella), measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles) and influenza.

Please remember to bring your child’s immunisation blue book with you!

COVID-19 Vaccine

Having COVID-19 vaccines and boosters are free for everyone in Australia, and protects you from coronavirus, and helps to prevent serious illness and death. Border General Practice currently offers Pfizer & Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. For any information about the latest recommendations to protect against COVID-19, please contact our practice or discuss with your doctor at your next appointment. Japanese Encephalitis (JEV) Vaccine

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV is a communicable disease associated with mosquitoes).

The JEV vaccine is recommended for people who work with mosquitoes, pork abattoirs, piggeries, or who live with people who work there. For a full list of who should get the vaccine, please contact our practice, or visit https://www.health.gov.au/health-alerts/japanese-encephalitis-virus-jev/vaccines

Travel Vaccines

Overseas travel is a lot to organise, but one thing you shouldn’t forget is keeping your family safe while travelling. Many countries have vaccine requirements or recommendations for vaccines to cover you against diseases that may not be in Australia or be less common here.

Reduce your risk by asking your General Practitioner which vaccines you should have and how soon before you travel.

We recommend booking an appointment at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure to assess your travel immunisation needs based on your destination. Some vaccines require multiple doses and/or take weeks to become effective.

Please bring with you any prior immunisation records to your assessment appointment.
